Notorious criminal killed in encounter in Thane Dist

Thane, Dec 19 (UNI) A notorious criminal was killed in an encounter with the district rural police here today.

Police said Lahu Kanjode (28) was involved in more than 20 cases of, murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and extortion, and was wanted by the police since long.

He was from Jawhar and ran riot in the district, the police said.

Acting on a tip-off that Kanjode would be visiting a place in Kashimira, the officials of the Thane Rural police and the local Crime Branch laid a trap to nab him. On spotting him, they asked to surrender but he reportedly fired at the police party who retaliated. He was injured and died on the way to hospital, they added.
