5 cops suspended in custodial death matter

Akola, Maharashtra, Dec 19 (UNI) Five policemen have been placed under suspension immediately following the custodial death of Santosh Tukaram Ghode (33) on December 17.

The deceased was arrested in a theft case on December 10. He was later shifted to a general hospital here, due to his varying blood pressure. On the night of December 11, he allegedly committed suicide by stabbing himself with a piece of broken glass. An operation was performed, but he finally succumbed to his injuries on December 17.

Five policemen were posted on duty for surveillance over the accused.

But none of them were present at the time of the incident, police sources said.

Meanwhile, probe into the matter has been entrusted to CID and investigations are on.

This is the third incident of custodial death in the district, police sources added.
