One person killed in Pondy

Puducherry, Dec 18 (UNI) A 35-year-old mason was today killed in a rain-related incident in Puducherry as heavy rain lashed the Union Territory and its suburbs since last night, disrupting normal life.

Police said the person was draining rain water in the terrace of his house at Villianur, near here, when he slipped and fell down.

Official sources said three mechanised boats were washed away off Sholainagar coast here and damaged as the sea remained rough.

Fishing nets in the boats were also lost.

Several low-lying areas were inundated and vehicular traffic was affected.

The Puducherry administration declared a holiday for all educational institutions here for one-and-a-half days from this afternoon.

Puducherry received 47.9 mm of rainfall during the 24 hours, ending 0830 hrs today.
