Chitrakoot, Dec 18 (UNI) Police today said they have rescued the three abducted public works department (PWD) employees from the clutches of dreaded dacoit Thokia -- carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head -- and arrested one person in this regard here.

''The abducted were rescued late last night after an encounter in Kotwali area,'' Police Superintendent Sachi Ghidilyal said today.

The outlaw had kidnapped PWD supervisor Rambabu and his colleagues Srichandra and Gorelal from Bhaganpur village yesterday evening and fled in a jeep towards the jungles.

The victims were working on an underconstruction road near Chitrakoot temple at the time of incident.

One of the accused has been arrested, while another managed to escape, police added.

The kidnapping incident had sent a shockwave in the area.

On May 22, six Special Task Force (STF) sleuths of Uttar Pradesh Police were killed in an encounter with the Thokia gang.

A day ealier on May 21, the STF had gunned down another equally dreaded brigand Dadua, whose reign of terror extended to Madhya Pradesh.

Following the elimination of Dadua, the Thokia gang has emerged stronger in the region with the convergence of several small gangs into it.

The UP Police had already launched 'Operation Thokia' to end his terror.
