NRI woman meets tragic end on 25th wedding anniversary

Amritsar, Dec 17 (UNI) An NRI woman who had come to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple alongwith her husband on the occasion of their 25th marriage anniversary, met a tragic end when she fell off a rickshaw near Novelty Chowk on the busy Lawrence Road here today while trying to ward off two motorcycle borne youths who tried to snatch her purse.

According to police sources the deceased identified as Kalpana Walia, a Canadian national, fell off the rickshaw and sustained a serious head injury. She was rushed to hospital where she died after sometime.

The police said that the deceased alongwith her husband Paramjit Walia, on their arrival from Jalandhar paid obeisance at the Golden Temple and then decided to have lunch at a restuarant on Lawrence Road. When the rickshaw on which they were seated slowed down near Novelty Chowk, two youths on a motorcycle made an attempt to snatch her purse.

In an attempt to save the purse from being taken away she fell off the rickshaw, with her head hitting the concrete. Profusely bleeding she was rushed to hospital where she died despite the best efforts of the doctors.

The police has registered a case and begun investigations. No arrests had been made so far.
