Punjab Police defeat BSF for the title

Jalandhar, Dec 16 (UNI) Hosts Punjab Police lifted the trophy by defeating Border Security Force (2-0) in the final of the 56th All India Police Hockey championship held at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.

Intelligence Bureau Director PC Haldar awarded the trophy to the winner and also distributed the medals to the team members, while Punjab Director General of Police NPS Aulakh presented the medals to the runners up.

Star studded Punjab Police, in the second minute itself, opened the account by converting penulty corner by Satwinder Singh. In the second half, Gagan Ajit Singh posted one more goal for Punjab by converting penulty corner in the 40th minute, whereas despite, many attempts in the first half and three penulty corners in the second half, BSF failed to convert any goal of them.

The Bronze Medal was awarded to Jammu and Kashmir, when it defeated Maharashtra by 4-3 in Sudden Death, when penulty strokes failed to decide the winner.

The Central Industrial Security Force bagged the Fair Play trophy for best disciplined team.

Also, for the first time, Punjab Police has introduced prizes in six categories for giving impetus to the competitive spirit and for encouragement of players, which were given to Roshan Madappa (Karnataka) for Best Field Goal Scorer, Satwinder Singh (Punjab) for Best Forward, Jugraj Singh (Punjab) for Best Penulty Corner Converter, Kanwal Preet Singh (Punjab) for Best Defender (Full Back), Niayaz Ulla (Maharashtra) for Best Half Back and Manjeet Singh (Punjab) for Best Goal Keeper.

In all, 22 teams from all over the country took part in the championship, in which nearly 500 sportspersons participated.
