Shimla, Dec 15 (UNI) The CPM today asserted that neither the UPA Government at the centre nor the next Himachal Pradesh Government could function without crucial support from the Left parties from outside.

Addressing a public meeting here, party's polit bureau member Sitaram Yechury said the Left parties were maintaining pressure on the central government that had resulted in the implementation of policies like National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA), and formation of the sixth pay commission besides putting an end to privatisation of public sector companies.

''Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has brought in policies of privatisation and liberalisation to India. However due to the sustained pressure by the Left parties, he too had to announce from the ramparts of the Red Fort that no PSU would be privatised.'' Referring to the previous NDA Government's ''Shinning India'' campaign, he said the neo-liberal economic policies of the BJP and the Congress Governments had produced 36 billionaires who were owing one fourth of the country total income, while the rest were struggling even for the basic amenities.

''The CPM was supporting the Congress Government at the Centre to keep the BJP at bay.'' Appealing local people to vote for CPM candidate Sanjay Chauhan from Shimla constituency, he said, it was the only party that was the real representative of the people While Congress believed in the politics of centralisation of powers the BJP stood for politics of regionalism and religion, he added.
