Chennai, Dec 15 (UNI) The person, reportedly behind the wheels of a Mercedez Benz car which fatally ran over two people sleeping on a pavement here two days ago, has surrendered before a court.

The person, Chandrakanth, surrendered before a Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate court last evening.

He was released on bail this evening.

Police are on the look out for another person, who had travelled in the car, and was absconding.

The Mercedez Benz car hit a two wheeler rider before climbing on a pavement and crushing to death two labourers, who were sleeping, and injuring ten others in the wee hours of December 13.

The car was badly damaged and the driver had fled the scene.

Meanwhile, an anonymous fax received by this office alleged that Achal Khemka, one of the scions of Kehmka family, owners of the prestigious NEPC Group, was behind the wheels when the accident took place.

It also alleged that police were trying to cover up the incident, despite knowing about the involvement of industrialist Khemka's family member in the mishap.
