Udupi, Dec 15 (UNI) BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa today warned if the UPA Government failed to accord classical status to Kannada language, his party and people of the State will launch an agitation.

Talking to newspersons on the sideline of the Valedictory of 74th All India Kannada Literary Conference here, he alleged that the Union Government had neglected projects pertaining to Karnataka, including irrigation and classical status to the Kannada language and other demands.

Mr Yeddyurappa admitted that lack of commitment on the part of politicians and the Government was one of the reasons for non-implementation of several pro-Kannada projects and according classical status to Kannada.

He said failure on the part of senior officials to represent the Government in the current major Conference showed laxity on their part for the welfare of Kannada.

He said a proposal by the Governor for establishing a Hindi Academy was a different issue. It has nothing to do with Kannada promotion activities, he added.

The BJP leader said he would make a sincere attempt to fulfill the demands of the Sammelan, as he had done during his 20-month tenure as the Deputy Chief Minister in the JD(S)-BJP regime.
