Lucknow, Dec 13 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh minorities welfare and minister of state for Haj (Independent charge) Anis Ahmad Khan today said the state government was committed to promoting Urdu language.

The state government is supporting several programmes initiated by the Urdu Academy, Mr Khan said in a seminar organised by the state Urdu Academy here.

''Urdu is not only spoken, read and studied in Indian sub-continent, but also in other countries,'' he reminded.

The language does not belong to any religion or community, but represents unity and brotherhood...simplicity is its main characteristic, he underlined.

Urdu was gaining popularity, as it has potential to meet the challenges of the changing society, Mr Khan added.
