Jammu, Dec 13 (UNI) Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway NH1A was partially restored today, two days after it remained cut off due to heavy snowfall, while more than 700 vehicles are still stranded near Banihal and Ramban, official sources said.

Sources said snow clearing work was in progress since yesterday but due to bad weather and fresh snowfall late last night, it was not possible to release vehicles trapped in snow.

''The members of Border Road Organisation (BRO) along with police are busy clearing snowy track since morning and out of nearly 1200 vehicles, around 500 halted vehicles were release in a phased manner, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic National Highway Danish Rana told UNI.

He said one way traffic movement has been restored after clearing snow which blocked the national highway between Jammu and Srinagar.

If the weather conditions remain favourable, the process will continue and the remaining vehicles are likely to be released by tomorrow, he added.

Around 1200 vehicles including passenger vehicles, trucks and load-carriers got trapped on Tuesday evening when the Valley remained cut off from the rest of the country by road due to heavy snowfall in the region.

The traffic on the arterial road was suspended in view of heavy accumulation of snow on the road.
