SC issues notices to 21 States to improve children homes

New Delhi, Dec 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court today isssued notices to 21 States on a PIL seeking directions to the State governments to improve the conditions of children homes.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal issued notices after hearing counsel for petitioner Sampurna Behrua who contended before the court that only four States have provided proper facilities in the children homes while rest of the States in the country have failed to implement the provisions of the Juvinile Justice Act.

The States are Orissa, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Manipur while rest of the States have failed to improve the deplorable conditions of the children homes.

The apex court directed 21 States to respond to the petition and give details of the steps being taken by the respective governments to improve the condition in the children home such as proper food, medical facilities and education of the children living in the homes.
