Police said the clash occurred when the DMK workers invited the DMDK men for the DMK's Youth Conference to be held in Tirunelveli this weekend.
As the DMDK workers resisted, a wordy duel ensued and both the groups clashed last night.
The incident took an ugly turn this morning, when a fresh bout of clash ensued in which workers of both the parties attacked each other with iron-rods.
Four DMK workers Ramesh (20), Vinayagam (19), Kumar (20), Selvam (20) and a DMDK worker Suresh (20) sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Kancheepuram General Hospital.
The incident virtually spilled over to the hospital premises when senior functionaries of both the parties came to visit the injured.
Tension prevailed in the hospital and police pickets were posted to prevent any untoward incident.
Police have taken seven DMDK workers into custody in connection with the incident.
