SC issues notice to Modi for remarks on Sohrabuddin
New Delhi, Dec 12 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notice to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on an application filed by Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of Sohrabuddin, seeking Mr Modi's prosecution for contempt of court for making remarks at an election meeting justifying the killing of Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausar Bi in a fake encounter.
A bench, comprising Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice Dalveer Bhandari, issued the notice after hearing counsel for the applicant, who contended that it was a serious matter and an executive head of a state cannot take a stand publically in contradiction to what his government had stated in the Supreme Court in an affidavit.
The apex court, however, adjourned the hearing of another application, filed by eminent lyricist Javed Akhtar, seeking an investigation by special investigating team SIT to ascertain the role of Mr Modi in all the fake encounters that have taken place in Gujarat since 2002 communal riots till January next year.
