Reports received here said Mr Raja, cited as one of the accused in former DMK Minister Aladi Aruna murder case, was travelling in his car on the Vaddakkakulam-Radhapuram road when a seven-member gang hurled bombs at him.
Since the car was travelling at good speed, the bombs missed the intended target. While Mr Raja escaped unhurt, his car driver sustained injuries.
The windscreens of the car were damaged in the incident.
The motive behind the attack was not yet known.
Mr Raja, involved in some other cases, was currently on bail in the Aladi Aruna murder case.
