Sangli, Dec 11: At least three workers died due to asphyxia in the Vasantdada Shetakari Co-operative Sugar factory here on Monday, after the leakage of carbon dioxide.

The police have identified the workers as Sunil Gore, Appsaheb Kate and Dnayshwar Bhasme.

Sunil was working near a mixing tank, in which cane juice is mixed with carbon dioxide, late this afternoon when its pipe broke leaking carbon dioxide, which made him uneasy and he collapsed.

Seeing him collapsed, Appasaheb and Dnayneshwar rushed to Sunil's help. However, they too felt uneasy and collapsed, police sources said.

Another worker, Suresh Kadam, has been admitted to the civil hospital here in serious condition, they added.
