Need to rehabilitate 65,000 hutments in airport vicinity

Mumbai, Dec 10 (UNI) There is a need for rehabilitation of 65,000 hutments while developing the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus and so far Mumbai International airport (MIAL) has purchased 53 acres of land on which 20,000 houses will be constructed.

This was indicated in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

The MIAL has identified nearly 100 acres of land and the process of purchasing the same is going on. The company officials said that efforts will be made for the rehabilitation of the slum dwellers within two-three km periphery of the airport.

Mr Deshmukh told the government officials to take stringent action against the illegal constructions and asked the officers to take strict action against those government staff who neglect their duties while removing the encroachments.
