MRF to set up tyre manufacturing unit in TN: Minister

Perambalur, Dec 10 (UNI) The Rubber giant MRF would set up a Rs 900-crore tyre manufacturing unit at Perambalur District in Tamil Nadu in a few months, according to Union Minister of Information Technology and Communications, A Raja.

Inaugurating the new building for the District Police Office (DPO) here yesterday, the Minister, who represents Perambalur in Lok Sabha said the MRF would start civil works as major part of the 350 acre required for the project had been acquired.

Mr Raja said work on laying a ring road at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore would start in six months. Land for the purpose was being acquired, he added.

He said two special courts would be set up at Jayamkondam to handle disputes on land acquisition for the Jayamkondam Lignite Power Project (JLPP), as part of expediting the preliminary works for the execution of the project. The dispute over compensation would be sorted out through the Special Courts by the year-end, he added.

The Minister said the site had been identified for setting up a Special Economic Zone(SEZ) here at an outlay of Rs 5,000 crore.

About 500 acre had been acquired and registered at an estimated cost of Rs ten crore, he added.
