IT Official held for demanding bribe

Chennai, Dec 7 (UNI) The CBI officials today arrested an officer of Income Tax Department for demanding money from a businessman.

An official release here said the official D Khandavel demanded an amount of Rs two lakh for clearing the name of the businessman against whom a complaint was pending with the investigating wing of the IT department.

As first instalment, Rs 50,000 was demanded in cash and Rs 50,000 as cheque.

The balance amount was to be paid subsequently.

Based on a complaint from the businessman, the CBI team caught the official while accepting the bribe amount.

The official was produced before Principle Special Judge for CBI cases and was remanded to judicial custody, the release added.
