Chandigarh, Dec 7 (UNI) A delegation of Congress legislators, led by PPCC President Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, met the Punjab Governor S F Rodrigues here today to protest the handing over of Punjab Agricultural University land for a cricket stadium at Bathinda.

Citing the announcement made by Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal of setting up of an International Cricket Stadium at Bathinda through advertisements published in major newspapers, they requested his immediate intervention to restrain Punjab government from transferring 29 Acres of prime land, at present being utilised asRegional Research Station of the PAU.

They also lashed out at Mr Badal for constantly accusing the Centre of having ''lackadaisical approach to the farmers of Punjab'' while on the other hand being ready to do away with a centre engaged in uplift of agriculture, specially when the state was passing through grave agrarian crises with a huge burden of Rs 24,000 crore as debt on the farmers.

Stressing that Congress wanted to promote sports in the state but not at the cost of the farming fraternity, it said, there were already two International Cricket Stadiums at Mohali and Chandigarh, but yet if the government wished to build a stadium at Bathinda it could acquire lesser important land, preferably in rural Bathinda.

The party also criticised the Chief Minister for not promoting traditional games like Hockey and Kabbadi and expressed apprehension that the prime land would be used for commercial cricketing.

The memo urged the Governor to intervene in the matter immediately in his capacity as the Chancellor of the PAU and stop the transfer of the said land for any commercial purpose and restrain the Chief Minister from performing the laying of foundation stone tomorrow.
