Kolkata, Dec 6: Coming down heavily on those equating Nandigram with Gujarat, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today said the people who were indulging in such campaign, were ''enemies of the country''.
''Some people and intellectuals are equating the developments in Nandigram with what happened in Gujarat in 1992. They are the enemies of society and the country. They are part of a bigger conspiracy against the Left government in West Bengal,'' he said speaking at a seminar on Babri Masjid demolition, organised by the youth welfare department of the West Bengal government.
Mr Karat, who perhaps for the first time went on an offensive against the strident campaign against the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government, said what had happened in Gujarat at the behest of Chief Minister Narendra Modi was the ''real face of fascism''. But it never happened in West Bengal, where there had always been a strict vigil against communalism or fascism.
''Those indulging in such a campaign do not know the elementary aspects of fascism. They are equating Mr Modi with Mr Bhattacharjee and it is time that we stood firm against these forces,'' he said.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in his speech alleged that an attempt was being made to poison the atmosphere in the state where communal forces like the BJP had always been kept at bay. He also urged the people to defeat the disruptive forces and work together for the state's development.
