First B ED college in Punjab for teachers of special children

Faridkot, Dec 6 (UNI) First B ED College in the state to specially train teachers for imparting education to children with special needs, especially mentally challenged students, was today inaugurated here.

The college, ''Umang Red Cross Institute of Special Education'' for running B ED Special Education (Mental Retardation), would be imparting degree with the affiliation of Punjabi University. It is the third such institution in the Northern States, the other two being at Jammu (J and K) and Rohtak (Haryana).

The institution was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner V K Meena, president of the Indian Red Cross Society, Faridkot Branch and dedicated as a gift to the mentally challenged people of state.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner said there was a dire need of such institution to train teachers to educate the mentally retarded students whose strength touched to about one lakh in the state.

The Institute was provided 20 seats to provide trained teachers for teaching mentally and physically challenged persons with one years degree course.
