Madras HC stays land acquisition for airport expansion

Chennai, Dec 5 (UNI) The Madras High Court today stayed all land acquisition process for the extension of Chennai Airport.

Justice Jothimani admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Mr Parthiban and 14 others to quash the land acquisition process of the state government on an extent of 1,069 acre of land adjacent to the present airport area, covering Kerugambakkam, Karambakkam, Kolambakkam, Manapakkam, Kovvur.

The petitioners also contended only the Civil Aviation Department can notify the land acquisition process to extend the airport.

The Tamil Nadu Government had no locus standi to acquire the land for the airport expansion project.

While admitting the petition, the judge ordered notices to the state government and the Civil Aviation Department returnable within two weeks.
