Tribal youths rescue wounded barking deer

Shillong, Dec 4 (UNI) Four tribal youths in Meghalaya were rewarded today for rescuing and providing medical aid to a wounded female barking deer.

The barking deer came down to Lawsohtun locality of Shillong from a forest area and was spotted by the youths at around 0830 hrs.

''We wanted to save the deer, apprehending that people might kill it,'' said T Nongkynrih, who took the initiative to rush the barking deer to the nearest veterinary hospital.

The deer was handed over to the wildlife officials after a veterinarian-applied ointment on the wounded parts of the deer.

The animal was also taken to a Shillong Civil hospital for an x-ray.

Meanwhile, the wounded deer has been sheltered at the Lady Hydari Park, which acts as rescue home for wild stray animals, while the forest department rewarded Rs 1,200 for their noble gesture UNI
