Medico strike called off in 8 colleges in TN

Chennai, Dec 4: Medicos in eight of the 14 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu have called off their more than two weeks strike against the Centre's move to make one-year rural posting compulsory.

The medicos of the Government Medical colleges of Thanjavur, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Theni, Kanniyakumari, Vellore and Madras Medical college decided to call off their strike last night following an appeal by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and after a meeting with Health Minister M R K Pannerselvam.

Mr Pannerselvam, during the discussions reiterated the Chief Minister's request to the students to return to their classes, pending the submission of a report by the Sambasiva Rao committee.

Mr Karunanidhi in his appeal to the medicos had said the 'one-year rural posting was only in the proposal stage and no amendments had been brought to the Act in Parliament.

The students of the remaining six medical colleges are expected to call off their stir today as talks were on to persuade them.
