Mumbai, Dec 4 (UNI) Medical students today got ''married'' to Union Minister for Health Anbumani Ramdoss in a mock marriage ceremony at KEM Hospital in Central Mumbai today.
The students and interns from all the medical colleges in the country have boycotted their regular studies and work to protest the Union government's proposal to increase the duration of the MBBS course from the present 5.5 years to 6.5 years, with a year of service in the rural areas.
They are of the view that by the time they complete their post-graduation as Doctor of Medicine (MD), they would have crossed 40 years of age and they would have difficulties in finding a suitable spouse.
In the mock marriage ceremony, some female medical students were married to Mr Ramdoss and as part of Gandhigiri, they placed a rose on the photograph of the Minister.
Dr Aniruddh, President of the Students Association of the KEM Medical College, said ''We are protesting against the government's proposal to extend the duration of the MBBS course and we want the Minister to know the difficulties we face while getting the degree, hence the ceremony.'' The proposal is expected to be presented in Parliament in the winter session.
