Lucknow, Dec 4 (UNI) A Congress MLA today staged a walkout of the the Uttar Pradesh legislative Assembly to protest the decision of the state government to ban students' union elections.

Anugruha Narain Singh raised the issue of continuing ban on students' union elections during Question Hour. Hukum Singh (BJP) wondered why the state government failed to hold the polls as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

State Parliamentary Affairs minister Lalji Verma said a five-member committee headed by the Chief Secretary was looking into the matter and any decision on the elections could be taken after the committee submitted its report. The minister claimed that increase in involvement of criminals in students' unions had forced the government to ban the elections.

Charging the government with trying to ''crush'' the democracy, Anugruha Singh walked out of the proceedings.
