5 new judges to be inducted in Punjab and Haryana HC

Chandigarh, Dec 4 (UNI) Five new judges would be inducted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court tomorrow, including the first woman lawyer to be elevated to the bench here.

Chief Justice Vijender Jain was scheduled to administer the oath of office to the new judges, who are senior members of the High Court Bar Association.

Ms Daya Chaudhary, one of the new judges to be appointed, is the first woman lawyer to be elevated to the bench here. She also has the distinction of being the only woman to head four-thousand strong bar association.

She was also the first lady lawyer to be appointed as the Assistant Solicitor General of India at the High Court here.

Others being elevated from the bar to the bench are Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia, R K Jain, Rakesh Kumar Garg and Haryana's Additional Advocate General Jaswant Singh.

With this, the strength of judges would go up to 42 against the sanctioned strength of 53 which is also proposed to be raised to 68.
