Income Tax Commissioner gets one year in jail for graft

New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) The Special Court, Ambala, has convicted and sentenced the Karnal Income Tax Commissioner to one-year rigorous imprisonment(RI) and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him on graft charges.

The CBI had registered a case in May 2002 against Commissioner Madan Lal for demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from one Rajesh Behal of Karnal in Haryana in return for a favour in the matter of income assessment of the latter's firm M/s Mortein Finlease Private Limited, according to an agency release.

After investigating the case, the CBI had filed charges in the court of Special Judge, Ambala, on August 22, 2003, who handed down two sentences of one-year imprisonment each and fines of Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000 to Madal Lal on November 30 this year under sections 7 and 13(1)(d) read with 13(1)(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, respectively. Both the sentences will run concurrently.

In another case, a Manager of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), Vishakapatnam Steel Plant, has been handed three-year rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50,000 for possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The Special Judge, CBI, Patiala, directed that Rs 93 lakh out of Ashwini Kumar Gupta's ''ill-gotten'' wealth be confiscated and deposited in the State's treasury.

The premier investigative agency had registered a case against Gupta on March 9, 2001.

After investigation, the agency had filed charges against Gupta on December 27, 2001 in the court of the Special Judge for possessing properties and pecuniary resources worth Rs 1.37 crore, which were disproportionate to his known sources of income.
