Police launches special drive against rickshaws

Varanasi, Dec 1 (UNI) Police launched a massive drive against unlicensed rickshaws running in the holy city to check the activities of anti-social elements hiding in the garb of rickshaw pullers.

Police Superintendent (city) Rajiv Malhotra informed that the drive had been launched yesterday on a information that some notorious criminals of north eastern states and Bangladesh have taken shelter in Varanasi to commit henious crimes.

''It has been informed that they are pulling rickshaws in the temple town. Therefore, hundreds of rickshaws running illegally have been seized and handed over Varanasi Nagar Nigam,'' the SP added.

Mr Malhotra said there were only 14,000 licenced rickshaws in the city area, but over 28,000 rickshaws were plying. Police was collecting the names of vehicle owners, their licences and other related information.
