New Delhi, Nov 30 (UNI) State-owned Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd today categorically said it has received equipment for 1,63,000 ports.

The company, which provides services in Delhi and Mumbai, said the equipment for 15,000 ports will be commissioned by the end of this month and the rest by the end of March 2008.

Clarifying the media report saying that MTNL has placed an order of 1,63,000 crore for equipment, the company's spokesman said it has not placed any such order, instead it has received equipment for 1,63,000 ports.

Earlier, MTNL Executive Director A K Arora said the company would add 50,000 broadband customers to the existing 5.5 lakh customers by March 2008.

However, he said it is 'difficult' to achieve the set target of nine million broadband connections by the end of this year.

Currently, the total broadband subscribers in the country stands at 25 lakh, a short by 65 lakh of the set target.
