Pune, Nov 30 (UNI) Social Activist Medha Patkar today said the country was heading towards crypto-capitalism as laws were being proposed to benefit the rich and powerful irrespective of their political leanings.

Addressing a press conference here, Ms Patkar said that the poor were being dispossessed of their lands under the name of ULC, SEZ and industrialisation by terror tactics, only to be grabbed by builders.

''There is no implementation of the rehabilitation policies for the displaced or the dispossessed. The whole conspiracy is to grab land and to promote real estate business. If people don't come together to oppose the government then soon many agitations, some even violent ones, will be witnessed,'' she warned.

''Politicians need to be taught a lesson, and made to honour promises of alternate homes and proper rehabilitation of the poor,'' she said.

Citing examples, she said whether a communist, or a Congress government was in power, sporadic agitations against land acquisition have been taking place, some sustained ones like in Nandigram, or POSCO in Orissa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and even Punjab.

''It is now for the people to come together to oppose these moves of the government,'' she said, adding that four 'Jathas' from Nandigram will be going to different parts of the country to create awareness about the land sharks.

The 'Jathas' will be going from Nandigram to North-East, Narmada, Kerala and Punjab to interact with the tribals, she informed.
