Participatory approach needed for water management:Centre

Agartala, Nov 29 (UNI) The Ministry of Water Resource has directed the Northeastern States to involve the users and stakeholders in a participatory approach for water resources management.

The Northeastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWLM) officials here today said it was necessary to adopt immediate remedial measures to check over-exploitation of water resources along with integrated planning and management.

They suggested the state governments to incorporate various government organisations and NGOs along with the users and stakeholders, in an effective and decisive manner, in various aspects of planning, design, development and management of water resources schemes.

''In certain areas of the region the water table has receeded drastically due to overuse of water and hence the ministry has taken steps to recharge the water level,'' sources said Experts and social workers have been involved in finding the most appropriate solutions to such problems, they added.

Referring to the National Water Policy, NERIWLM officials pointed out that they emphasised on physical and financial sustainability of the existing facilities.
