TN Govt to start 20 engineering colleges: Minister

Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Nov 28 (UNI) Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy today said the government proposed to start 20 engineering colleges in the state.

Addressing the gathering at the Third Convocation of Tiruvalluvar University here, Mr Ponmudy, also the Pro-Chancellor, said some raised the question on the need to start more engineering colleges when seats in existing colleges remained vacant.

He said not a single seat was vacant in government engineering colleges though the same cannot be said about private institutions.

Mr Ponmudy also informed the government would recruit 1,062 professors for various colleges.

The Minister said the university which had been functioning from rented premises had been allocated 112.68 acre of land in Katpadi for building its campus.

Earlier, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala who presided gave away degrees to students.A total of 19,106 students received degrees for various courses at the function.
