Man arrested for failure to pay Duty tax

Chennai, Nov 28 (UNI) Customs Officials in Chennai Airport have arrested a passenger who arrived here from Singapore, for failure to pay Duty tax for his baggage.

Talking to newspersons here, Chennai Airport Customs Commissioner C Rajan said the Chennai-based passenger Surjith Ali(45), who landed at 2200 hrs, had a suitcase and a hand bag with him. He tried to evade the customs officials and wanted to leave the airport through the green channel.

He said the officials found Rs 32 lakh worth watch, studded with 400 diamonds inside his suitcase and a watch worth Rs ten lakh in his handbag.

The officials seized the watches and arrested the passenger.

An incident of this nature had occured for the first time in airport this year, he added.
