Free colour TVs to all poor households in TN: CM
Chennai, Nov 27 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said colour television sets will be distributed to all the families which do not have them, under the free colour TV distribution scheme in the state.
Addressing reporters after distributing free colour TVs and gas stoves here, he said the government till date, had distributed 21,9271 TVs and would soon complete the distribution of 25 lakhs sets in the second phase.
In the third phase, the government proposed to distribute 34.25 lakh CTVs. The government also proposed to distribute eight lakh gas stoves in the second phase.
Headed by him, a committee of legislators from various parties ensured fool-proof process in procurement of sets, he said.
The committee had recently decided to procure 34.35 lakh CTVs at a cost of Rs 750 crore for distribution in the third phase. As promised in the election manifesto, the DMK Government after coming to power, had launched the schemes.
Nowhere in the country, the schemes were implemented with such a great success, the Chief Minister said adding there was no charge of any corruption in the TV procurement and distribution.
He said many people ridiculed the government when it came out with the scheme, stating that it would never take off, but the government silenced them by successfully implementing it.
The TV sets were being provided to the families which do not have sets, to enable them to know about the world news and the developments taking place in science and technology, he said.
