First Global Parliamentry meet on HIV/AIDs in Manila from tomorrow

New Delhi, Nov 27 (UNI) A six-member parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha member Dr Karan Singh Yadav will attend the first Global Parliamentary meeting on HIV/AIDs at Manila from tomorrow.

According to a Lok Sabha Secretariat release issued here today, the four-day long meeting is being organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in collaboration with Parliament of the Philippines at Manila. The overall theme of the meeting is ''Leadership'' coinciding with the theme of the World AIDs Day falling on December one.

Though world leaders have promised to provide universal access to treatment, care, support and prevention services by 2010, the promises are not being kept on account of various limitations and restrictions including lack of leadership at every level.

There have been a number of national and regional parliamentary initiatives taken by the leaders in this area, but never before the world's Parliaments been convened to jointly discuss their role in responding to the crisis.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to enlist the full force of the world's legislature in the fight against the AIDs pandemic in which Parliaments are crucial stakeholders.
