Patiala, Nov 27 (UNI) Punjabi University Vice Chancellor (VC) Swarn Singh Boparai confirmed here today that he had submitted his resignation to the Punjab Governor Gen (Retd) S F Rodrigues, who was also Chancellor of the University.

Mr Boparai, who was serving a second term as the VC, however, refused to elaborate upon the reasons for his resignation, remarking that he would speak out at the appropriate time on this issue.

Mr Boparai had gone to meet Governor Rodrigues and also met Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal a day after Vigilance Bureau sleuths had questioned him on November 14 about the recruitment during his tenure.

Since then, speculations were rife about his having quit the prestigious post.

''I am happy over the development that the University has witnessed during my five-year tenure as vice-chancellor. In fact, this is one of the most happening years of the University when a series of development projects were taken up and I am satisfied over the spectacular development in different fields,'' he said.

Dr Baldev Singh Sandhu, Registrar of the University, also put in his papers at the office of the Vice-Chancellor.

Dr S S Khaira, a senior faculty member from the Department of Law, was appointed Acting Registrar.

Punjabi University had been on the boil for several months now and a Joint Action Committee of teachers, non-teaching staff and students, had been spearheading an agitation demanding resignation of the Vice Chancellor.
