Mayor's conference to focus on making cities gender friendly

Chandigarh, Nov 26 (UNI) The two-day All India Mayors Conference to be held here from December 8 would focus on strengthening initiatives for gender friendly cities and good governance through sharing and learning of best practices.

According to official sources, around 49 mayors of various cities across the country have already confirmed their participation and many more were likely to confirm in the conference soon.

Gender equality and empowerment of women, one of the Millennium Development Goals adopted by International community, have been chosen as the focus issue of the conference as it is critical in context of improving urban governance and making cities more inhabitable.

Other vital issues to be discussed includes rapid urbanisation and its concomitant problems, sanitation, clean and safe drinking water, greenery and improvement in the condition of slums and pollution free environment in the big cities.

In the conference the mayors would deliberate upon and share their experiences while exploring at the same time city to city cooperation and twinning.
