Amnesty team to visit Nandigram

New Delhi, Nov 26 (UNI) Amnesty International India and Human Rights Watch, two leading human rights organisations, today announced that they would send a team to Nandigram, between November 28 and 30.

The team would comprise of former Chief Justice and Sikkim High Court Judge (Retd) S N Bhargava; New Delhi based advocate Vrinda Grover; Human Rights Watch South Asia Researcher Meenakshi Ganguly and Amnesty International India Director Mukul Sharma.

The team will visit the region, meeting the victims, different parties involved, as well as government authorities. It will inquire into the events leading to the violence during the past two months.

It will also probe into the social and economic impacts of the violence and about the violations of national and international human rights standards and UN Conventions to which India is a party.

Upon completion of its work, the team would make recommendations to appropriate authorities.
