Fishermen protest Navy's 'use' of fishing jetty

Rameshwaram, Nov 25 (UNI) Fishermen today staged a silent demonstration here to register their protest against the Navy for using the fishing jetty to berth its boats.

According to Emiret, a member of a fisherman association, the Navy was allegedly using the fishing jetty though it had a separate jetty to tie its boats.

The officials of the Fisheries Department held talks with the agitating fishermen and assured them to take up the matter with the Naval officials, following which the agitators withdrew.

A strilke would be launched tomorrow if the Navy did not remove boats from fishing Jetty, they warned.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Navy personnel surrounded machanised fishing boats of Indian fishermen anchored near Kachativu and took away the catch estimated to be of about Rs one lakh.

They warned the fishermen against entering the territorial waters of Sri Lanka near Kachativu, officials said.
