Action against 33 self-financing engg colleges initiated: Minister

Chennai, Nov 24 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government has initiated action, including derecognition and deaffiliation, against 33 self-financing engineering colleges across the state, on the charges of collecting fee amount higher than that stipulated by the government.

Talking to newspersons here today, Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudi said ''the government has written to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in this regard.'' Replying to a question, he said, the state had also requested the UGC to give more powers to decide on matters regarding private universities.

The Bill to bring uniformity to all University procedures would be tabled in the next Assembly session, he said.

''Preliminary work in this regard is on and we will table it before the Assembly in the next session to bring the Common Universities Act'', he added.

The government, after nearly 20 years, had given appointment to about 1,000 people to the posts of lecturers in government and aided colleges in the state, he said.

''As many as 975 people have been selected from a total number of 16,000 interviewed,'' he said, adding, the process to fill another 1,062 vacancies would be started soon.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would hand over the appointment orders to the selected persons on December one, he said.
