Kolkata, Nov 23 (UNI) Steel Ministry was considering setting up a Special Mining Zone (SMZ) to ensure smooth mining of iron ore without affecting the environment.

Secretary to the Steel Ministry R S Pandey during an interaction with an expert committee, constituted by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), on minerals and metals, said here today that most of the mines in the country were located in the forest areas and hence there was a possibility of environmental degradation at the timing of mining of iron ore, a primary component of making steel.

'' The SMZ is a solution to this problem and it will ensure untroubled mining of iron ore without polluting the environment which in turn will enrich production of steel, '' he observed.

Mr Pandey informed that the SMZ would be operationalised under the guidance of experts having knowledge and experience on mining as well as environment.

Referring to the infrastructural problems coming in the way of growth of steel sector, he said a report in this regard had been prepared by his Ministry and circulated to other concerned departments for their approval.

'' We are committed to making India at par with China and other countries in regard to steel production focussing on not only increasing our capacities but also making it cost effective, '' Mr Pandey maintained.
