Punjab Governor extends greetings on Guru Nanak's birthday

Chandigarh, Nov 23 (UNI) The Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen (retd) S F Rodrigues has extended his heartiest greetings on the auspicious 'Gurpurv' of Guru Nanak Dev and called for building a society based on the Guru's vision.

In a message, on the occasion, Gen Rodrigues said that Guru Nanak's philosophy seeks 'Sarbat Da Bhala' (welfare of all) and his message is relevant to the whole world, transcending all boundaries of regions and religions. He said that Guru Nanak was born at a time when society was ridden with the prejudices ofcaste, creed, social inequalities, discrimination against women and ill-gotten wealth.

The Guru launched a crusade against all these social evils and worked throughout his life, to put an end to all kind of exploitation and hypocrisy. He advocated the cause of the oppressed sections and propagated the message of a casteless and classless society, the message said.

Gen Rorigues said that the Guru believed in one supreme power and his teaching encompasses belief in the oneness of God and unity of mankind.

Gen Rodrigues further said that the Guru's teachings are particularly relevant today, in this complex and materialistic world. More than ever, the country needs the message of love, harmony and brotherhood preached and practiced by Guru Nanak, the message added.

The Governor appealed to the people to re-dedicate themselves to the ideals and goals set out by the great Guru and to celebrate his 'Parkash Utsav' in a spirit of social harmony, equality and well-being of the people.
