Prez, V-Prez, PM greet people on Guru Nanak's birthday

New Delhi, Nov 23 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today greeted the people on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, which will be celebrated tomorrow.

''On the auspicious occasion of the birthday of Guru Nanak Devji, I convey my heartiest greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens,'' Ms Patil said in a message.

The Guru's message of equality, peaceful co-existence and universal love ''is an abiding source of inspiration for all. Let us resolve to deeply understand his noble teachings and rededicate ourselves to the cause of humanity, equality, brotherhood and harmony,'' she said.

In his message, the Vice-President said Guru Nanak's divine message of devotion of thought, excellence of conduct and tolerance has a timeless relevance and can transform society.

His birthday offers us the opportunity to derive inspiration from his life and deeds by creating a just, peaceful and contented society, he said.

The Prime Minister, in a message, said Guru Nanak's life teachings show the path to spiritual salvation and inspire us to embrace equality, compassion and humanism.

Dr Singh hoped the Guru's teachings would continue to guide humanity for all times to come.

In another message on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur, which also falls tomorrow, the President asked the people to remember the glory of his sacrifice.

''The life, teachings and martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur form a message of everlasting significance. Guru Teg Bahadur worked for the alleviation of the sufferings of the people. On this day, let all of us resolve to re-dedicate ourselves to his message of love,'' she said.
