Kochi, Nov 22 (UNI) Chennai-based, Taj Mahal Agro Industries today launched low-glycemic 'Moolgiri' rice in Kerala, which will be a healthier choice for diabetic patients.

Speaking to reporters here, Company MD C Selvarajah said the rice was developed by selection of specialty grain, optimal farming and other innovative process of the research wing of the company.

''The Glycemic Index (GI) is the ability of a food to raise the blood glucose levels, and this rice with a low GI level tends to help people lose weight and increase the body's sensitivity to insulin,'' he said.

A recent study conducted in Canada proved that the rice, priced at Rs 48 per kg, had a GI value of 54.1 and was a low GI food, he noted.

Mr Selvaraj said the company had a network of farmers having more than 10,000 acres of land in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

Though the ISO-9001 and HACCP certified company had its presence only in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it would be expanding its footprints to other parts of the country in the near future, he said.

''The plant in Chennai with a production capacity of 72,000 tonnes had the latest machinery supplied by Swiss company 'Bhuler','' he added.

Presently, the company was exporting its products to Australia, New Zealand, UAE and US, and was planning to start trade with certain European countries, he said.
