RS adjourned for 30 minutes over Kolkata firing incident

New Delhi, Nov 21 (UNI) Police firing on a procession in Kolkata as a fallout of the Nandigram issue rocked the Rajya Sabha in post-lunch session today forcing adjournment of the House for 30 minutes.

As soon as the House assembled at 1400 hrs after lunch, BJP members, led by Mr S S Ahluwalia, and Dinesh Trivedi of the Trinamool Congress, were on their feet demanding that Home Minister give a statement in the House on the incident.

Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan tried to pacify the members saying the government had agreeed to discuss the Nandigram issue in the House tomorrow.

He said the government had already taken notice of the matter and agreed to discuss the issue.

He also said law and order was a state subject. ''How can I call the Home Minsister when it is a statee subject,'' he askeed.

However, the agitated members demanded that Home Minister Shivraj Patil come to the House and give the exact picture to the members.

Mr Trivedi said the television was showing the incident and Parliament could not afford to ssit silent. He said the government shpould at least inform the House of the situation.

The noise continued for seven minutes after which the Deputy Chairman adjourned the House for half an hour.
