Pathanamthitta, Nov 18 (UNI) Sannidhanam police today detained a 35-year-old woman, who tried to defy the age-old ban on the entrance of women to the Lord Ayyappa temple here.

Sannidhanam Police said the woman identified as Selvi from Selappattoor in Puducherry was detained at 'Valiyanadappanthal'.

She tried to enter the sanctum along with her husband.

They said Selvi gave a slip to 11 women police constables deployed at Pampa to prevent women from proceeding to Sannidhanam.

On interrogation, the woman confessed that it was her fifth attempt.

However, she was let off after a warning, police added.

The controversy over the ban on women at Lord Ayyappa temple had been stirred up in 2006 with Kannada actor Jayamala claiming that she had entered the sanctum and touched the Lord Ayyappa idol.
