Mumbai, Nov 16 (UNI) An expert brought in by the defence in the Pramod Mahajan murder trial today successfully demonstrated how an SMS in phone memory can be fabricated or altered.

Technical expert Harikrishna B today made a second attempt before the court after he had failed to demonstrate the same in the morning session.

Demonstrating before additional sessions Judge S P Davre, the witness had used a Motorola handset which was similar to the one which was used by the BJP leader at the time when he was killed.

After the failure of the witness at the first attempt, the defence sought another chance in the afternoon session, which was allowed by the court, and it proved successful.

Earlier, Advocate Harshad Ponda, appearing for accused Pravin Mahajan, had questioned the witness whether an SMS could be tampered by any means, and the witness had replied in the affirmative.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam had then urged the court to direct the witness to give a demonstration in the court.

The contention of the defence was that the SMS message, allegedly sent by Pravin Mahajan to his elder brother Pramod a few days before the latter was shot at, was fabricated and had not been sent by Pravin at all. The SMS read, ''Ab Yachana Nahi Ran Hoga, Jivan Vijay Ke Sath Ya Maran Hoga.'' Pravin stands accused of murdering Pramod Mahajan, who was shot at on April 22 last year and succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital on May 3, 2006. Over 32 prosecution witnesses had already been examined in the case.
