Bhubaneswar, Nov 16 (UNI) The CPI, Orissa, today demanded suspension of the Sambalpur district Collector and the Police Superintendent who were present during the lathi charge on farmers protesting supply of water to industrial houses from the Hirakud reservoir last month.

CPI state Secretary Dibakar Nayak said if the government did not concede to their demand, hundreds of farmers and labourers would gherao the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner in Sambalpur on November 30.

In December thousands of farmers would launch a civil disobedience movement in front of the district collector's office and court arrest, he said.

Mr Nayak said a resolution in this regard was passed at a joint meeting of the party state working committee and district secretaries here yesterday.

The CPI leader alleged that crop worth Rs three hundred crore was damaged after the government supplied water to industrial houses from the Hirakud reservoir and from various rivers.

When the farmers protested the policies of the state government they were lathi charged, he said.

Mr Nayak said similar situation would arise in undivided Cuttack district if water was supplied to the proposed POSCO steel plant from the Zobra barrage.

Mr Nayak said the party would oppose the allocation of fertile land in Dhinkia, Nuagaon and Gadakujanga area for the setting up of the POSCO plant .

He wanted the government not to use force on people fighting to protect the interest of their state.
